Patient Educational Series

Spine problems can be very difficult to understand and hard to treat. The Deerpath Spine Institute was founded to help the patients of the far western and southwestern suburbs of Chicago help navigate through these difficult problems. We have thus created a comprehensive spine care institute with physicians/surgeons with world class training, extensive experience, and an exquisite sensitivity to the patient's and his/her family's fears/concerns regarding treatments. Our goal is to take the best care of the patient as a person as well as the patient's spine condition.

It is very important for the patient to understand the spine condition properly and exhaust all reasonable non-operative treatment problems prior to considering surgery. The physicians, surgeons, physician assistants, and nurses have extensive training and experience in the non-operative as well as the operative treatment of musculoskeletal and spinal disorders. Our goal is to avoid surgery whenever possible and educate the patient on the indications for surgical intervention as well as the outcomes of surgery.

In the end, if surgery is needed, the patient must make an informed decision based on his/her understanding of the problem and understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives to surgical intervention. Most importantly, the patient must feel comfortable with his/her surgeon. We at Deerpath believe it is the surgeon's moral and ethical responsibility to:

  1. Ensure that all reasonable non-operative treatments have been tried
  2. Ensure surgery is indeed necessary
  3. Decide which surgical procedure would best serve the patient's condition
  4. Ensure the patient fully understand the rationale underlying the decisions regarding his/her care, in both the short-term as well as the long-term.

As a commitment to patient understanding and education, these webpages have been designed to help explain the most typical spinal conditions in a patient-friendly manner. Please discuss the specifics of your situation with a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon, as they are best trained to manage the non-operative and operative treatments for your particular condition.
